A Pound of Flesh is set in New York. It follows the story of Kat, a young woman who, when she was just nine years old, witnessed the murder of her father. To overcome her prejudice and fears of criminals, she trains as a teacher and becomes a Literature tutor at a prison on Staten Island. There she meets Carter, a prison inmate.
We follow the relationship that builds between the two characters and the challenges they have to overcome, not just from each other, but from everyone else. It’s a story of redemption and acceptance.
Sophie on: A Pound of Flesh
I’ve always favoured stories with strong female characters, which Kat certainly is, and it was vitally important to make sure that Carter was equally strong. He and Kat are a fiery pair, which makes for fantastic tension!
Carter is the epitome of the strong, silent type. The anti-hero archetype. He has an air of dark mystery, a dangerous aura – the kind of character I love – yet underneath his arrogance lurks a sensitive fragility that I hope will melt your heart.
Carter is a very special character to me for many reasons, not least because he’s completely misunderstood. He is fiercely passionate and loyal to a fault. Even though Carter has done so much in his life for those he loves, he doesn’t boast nor truly conceive of what a good man he is. Creating him and slowly seeing him start to believe his worth as the story progressed was a wonderful experience.
I only hope you love Carter and Kat as much as I do. So, enjoy!
But hold on tight – you’re in for a bumpy ride…
“[Sophie] writes the type of stories today’s reader wants: beautifully created characters filled with emotion, and a storyline that sticks with you long after you turn the last page” – Tara Sue Me, New York Times bestselling author of the Submissive series
“An intriguing tale of acceptance and finding love in unexpected circumstances” – J.M. Darhower, author of Sempre
“This forbidden love story is rife with danger and will impart that feeling of sneaking risqué books under the bedcovers with a flashlight and staying up past your bedtime to finish an amazing story. Jackson convinces readers that love can be found in the most unlikely places and situations. This one is entirely heartfelt, hot and should be the very next book on your TBR list” – RT Book Reviews
